| Welcome
to Petarian - Abdalian Relief Efforts
Progress
Report of Dec 2005
|
We have now
concentrated primarily on 2 projects and we
have progressed substantially in this regard.
Let me give you the details here.
Primary Healthcare in Tehsil Bagh
We signed an agreement with the govt. of Azad
Kashmir, Dept of Health around a month ago
to take over four of their Basic Health Units
with the objective of
-
Reconstructing
the buildings of the clinics that were destroyed
during the earthquake
-
Providing
doctors
-
Providing
medicines free of cost
-
Operating
these facilities for a minimum period of
6 months, which can be extendable
-
The
lower staff employed by the AJK govt. will
work with our staff
As of this date, we have already reconstructed
2 out of the 4 buildings in a period of
less than 4 weeks. These are as follows:
-
Basic
Healthcare Building at Rerah, Tehsil Bagh,
which is around 1,200 sq.ft with 5 rooms
-
Forward
Healthcare Building at Seri Gala, Tehsil
Bagh (at an altitude of over 6,000ft), which
is around 250 sqft.
We are now constructing the remaining two
buildings as follows:
-
Basic
Healthcare Building at Lohar Bela, Tehsil
Bagh, which will also be over 1,000 sq.ft
-
Forward
Healthcare Building at Samni, Tehsil Bagh,
which will be around 250 sqft
We hope to complete the construction of
these 2 buildings within the next 2 weeks
insha Allah.
We have the option to construct a fifth
building at Seri, Tehsil Bagh, which is
midway between Rerah and Seri Gala. This
village is the center for the villages of
Kathi and Barikot as well.
With these 5 units in place, we will be
covering primary healthcare facilities for
a population of over 30,000.
The buildings we have constructed are made
of sandwich panels (steel sheets on outer
and inner surface, with thermopore in between
for insulation). The structure is made of
angle iron to withstand any earthquake shock.
The entire structure is bolted with riveting
on the panels.
We have also poured a PCC (cemented) slab
for the floor. In addition, we have done
complete electrification of the buildings
with proper lighting and electrical heating.
The buildings have also been furnished with
desks, chairs, benches, examination tables,
stools, racks, etc.
We already have most of the basic medical
tools required. I shall list out separately
what we still need to be able to operate
fully.
At present, we have 3 doctors employed to
run the OPD clinics at these facilities.
We also have an overall staff of nearly
20 people to manage these health clinics.
I shall post photographs of these facilities
in separate emails for you to see.
Sarbuland Village
Our second major project in this area is
Sarbuland Village which has been constructed
from scratch near Bagh town. This village
comprises of the following:
-
100
homes - that are being allotted on 99 year
lease to widows, destitute, disabled, orphans
and other poorest segment families in the
area.
-
A
Montessori school
-
A
primary school up to 6th grade
-
A
Basic Healthcare Unit
-
A
Vocational Training Center for Women
-
Camp
for the Village Managers
-
Commercial
Center
-
Playgrounds
-
Roads
properly planned out
-
Street
Lighting
-
Community
Baths and Toilets
-
Water
Supply System
-
Electrical
supply from the main Utility
-
Telephone
lines
Each home comprises of one room made of
steel sheets with wood insulation/panelling
from inside, and a second room that is a
fiberglass container (donated by the Turkish
Red Crescent Society). In addition, there
will be a small kitchenette with each home.
The village construction started nearly
a month back, and the work is more than
90% complete.
The Petarian Foundation will be managing
the village for the next 5-10 years, providing
sanitation services, maintenance of hygiene,
operating the healthcare unit, operating
the school, supervising other NGOs that
will operate the Montessori and Vocational
Training Center, roads and building maintenance,
operation and maintenance of the electric
supply and telephone lines, etc. In other
words, the Petarian Foundation will function
as the municipal corporation for this village.
We have already hired the core staff for
this project and more people will come on
board over the next month or so.
The village is expected to be inaugurated
within the next week or two, and the residents
should start moving in very soon thereafter.
